This command allows to you to change the order of files in the file list. Say you had used "Find Files" to search for MacWrite files. The files are added to the list in the order they are found - Bat Filer starts with the first folder on a volume, searches it, then any folders IT contains, etc. Now, using the "Sort List" command you can re-order the list in ways that tell you more about your files. For example, you can order the list by modification date; files most recently modified appear at the end of the list.
The "Sort List" menu item has a hierarchal menu attached to it, showing the different kinds of sort available. They are:
• By Name: files are ordered alphabetically by their names.
• By Comment*: files are ordered alphabetically by the text of their Finder "Get Info" comments. (NOTE: Using this command requires off-line volumes to be inserted.)
• By Vol:Folder: files are ordered by what folder they are in.
• By Size: largest files at the beginning, smallest at the end.
• By Create Date: files with earlier creation dates come before those created later.
• By Mod Date files with earlier modifications dates come before those created later.
• By Kind: System files come first, then applications, then documents.
• By Creator: files are ordered alphabetically by their creator codes.
Choosing one of these commands begins the sort. A window showing the progress of the sort appears; pressing [Command]-[period] will abort the sorting process.
